We believe vibrant, local schools are essential for building and maintaining diverse, stable communities with deep roots. To this end, we operate a neighborhood preschool, provide ongoing support for our public elementary schools, and invest in other local education initiatives.
One of PREFund’s primary contributions to the community has been the founding and operation of Potrero Kids (PK), a Spanish bilingual preschool serving roughly 100 students per year.
Open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. and serving three meals a day, PK provides high quality preschool services to the working families of Potrero and the Eastern Neighborhoods.
PREFund has been instrumental in transforming Daniel Webster Elementary (DW) from a school slated for closure into one of San Francisco Unified School District’s hidden gems.
Our founders were part of a group of parents and neighbors who rallied for an intense, and ultimately successful, grassroots campaign to overturn the closure recommendation from SFUSD and its Board of Education.
Throughout its history, PREFund has contributed financial support to neighborhood efforts that educate children, including the NABE, International Studies Academy, Starr King Elementary School, and Friends of Potrero Hill Nursery School (FOPHNS). For FOPHNS in particular, we not only supplied a grant, we also provided a playbook on how to work with the SFUSD to repurpose an unused school space for the public good and helped negotiate the lease with the SFUSD facilities/real estate dept.
